Adolescent Mind Course Components:
This is an instructor-led class for groups up to 20 students....

1. The History of Adolescence--How other people, throughout time, have coped (usually successfully) with adolescents. Discussion will include rites of passage and initiation roles, stages of growth, and a comparison between Western youth and adolescents in other times and places. Includes: The State of the Adolescent Nation--A review of the statistics related to American youth: how many are doing how much of what.

2. Adolescent Development--What’s normal, or at least what’s be expected. Topics include identity issues, abstracting abilities, developmental stages, and a look at risk taking behavior.

3. Family Roles--A look at functional and dysfunctional roles common to at-risk and foster youth. Family guilt, birth order characteristics, loyalty issues and generational behavior patterns will be explored.

4. Communication--What teens are trying to say and how we can and should respond to them. We’ll also look at the myriad of techniques they use to get what they want, including emotional blackmail, manipulation and threats.

5. Behavior Management--What works, what doesn’t, and why. Tools and techniques to affect behavior change, improve supervision and control abilities, and improve personal boundaries.

6. Anger Management--We’ll learn to recognize escalating behavior and what to do to reduce youth “going off.” Appropriate venting, journaling anger patterns and learning how to avoid having your buttons pushed will be discussed.

The following two components may be added for a longer class:

Gangs--A look at the roles they fill for young people and why they remain successful. We’ll look in depth at the multitude of ways kids directly and indirectly associate with gangs, how they show gang loyalty, disrespect for rival gangs through written and spoken language, and ethical shifts among gang members. We'll also look at how the gang mentality is being perpetuated through the media and sports logo apparel.

Drugs & Alcohol--We’ll look at why youth are so anxious to escape or avoid daily life, how drugs affect developmental growth and why many drug treatments are not working.
